After a day on the slopes, soothe those sore muscles by relaxing in a private hot tub. A bonus is when they’re outside with a view. Watch the sunset, enjoy the outdoor sparkling lights that come on at dusk all over a ski town, and even the occasional fireworks display over the ski mountain.
Some prefer to go Nordic-style and enjoy the dry heat of a sauna. Take it from the Finns who are out skiing in the cold all winter long. There are more saunas in Finland than cars. Others, however, need humidity since the air is so dry and steam showers are just the remedy. Look for a vacation home with a sauna and/or steam showers and you’ve got your own personal spa.
Some people prefer seclusion but might want to have just a peek of some runs at the top of the mountain. If you want to be closer to the action, choose a home with views of the base area. Either option could allow you to see fireworks, night skiing lights, kids on the magic carpet, or ice skaters in the village.
It’s no fun lugging skis and poles around, especially with kids in tow. Some properties have ski valets who will take your skis right out of your hands at the bottom of the run and have them waiting outside the next morning.

After skiing, put the boots on the boot dryer, lose the jackets and snow pants and head straight to the fireplace for après. Sometimes even on vacation you must check in with the office, maybe take a meeting or send some emails. It’s that much more tolerable if you can make a few runs, maybe even First Tracks before the rest of the group is even out of bed, and then head back to the chalet with a quiet office and fast WiFi. No need to work at the kitchen table when your luxury vacation home has a closed-door office with desk and chair, and a view as a bonus!
The next best thing is a complimentary shuttle service if your vacation rental home is not within walking distance of the slopes. Drivers will show up in your driveway, load your gear, and off you go to the base area. Oops, someone forgot their goggles at the house.?! No problem, call the shuttle for a quick trip back to the house. Dinner reservations? Easy, request a shuttle. Let someone else do the driving on snowy mountain roads in the middle of winter!
