Powder! Powder! Everywhere!

Powder Ski Steamboat

Two new feet of snow in 4 days usually means panic in most areas of the country. In Colorado, it means pleasure!

We aren’t kidding when we say that we “live in a snow globe.” This past weekend, 25” - 28” of new snow blanketedSteamboat, Vail and Beaver Creek. Roads were closed, snow days were declared, and powder clauses went into effect all over town.

The storms across the state began last Thursday and continued well into Sunday evening. The snow had a short reprieve on Sunday, just long enough to give us one of those coveted sunny, blue sky, fresh snow, picture-perfect ski days. Then the clouds rolled back in overnight and dropped several more inches onto Monday morning.

Snowmaking machines can probably take the week off as state-wide snowpack is at 135% of the average, and the next storm cycle is expected next week. In fact, it looks like Santa might be bringing a sleigh full of snow with him on December 24th, that is when Open Snow meteorologist, Joel Gratz expects the next storm to start.

Temperatures have been chilly which makes this fantastic snowfall stick around longer. It also means that if you’re lucky enough to be arriving in Steamboat, Vail or Beaver Creek this week, you should plan on packing your warmest layers for your ski days. Don’t worry, you’ll be plenty warm after your ski day with the fires stoked, the hot tubs steamed and your cozy chalet waiting.

Woo hoo!
