Après ski is perhaps one of the most universally celebrated parts of ski culture. The tradition is said to have started in Norway in the 1880s, exploded in popularity in the Alps in the 1950s, and has since spread to ski resorts around the world.
Après encompasses any social activity or entertainment after a day on the slopes. It generally involves raising a glass and toasting to the vertical you skied that day, the depth of the powder, or simply celebrating what fun you had with friends and family.
Whether your taste is champagne and caviar, a cold craft beer with loaded nachos, or wine and charcuterie, anything goes. The same if you prefer a luxe or laid-back vibe, it all counts. But what really elevates what some might say is just a “happy hour” is where and how you après – quietly watching the alpenglow over the mountains, sharing stories around a roaring fire (inside or out), soaking in a rooftop hot tub, or playing a game of pool.
You’ll find the perfect spot in one of our Moving Mountains vacation homes.
It's party time! In some ski resorts, the après scene can turn rowdy. But when your luxury vacation home has its own bar area and game tables, head back to your chalet and let the fun begin.
As the sun starts to set over the slopes, the sky glows. Take it all in while sipping your cocktail of choice, or a glass of champagne as they prefer in France, or an Aperol Spritz in the Italian Alps.
Warm up around a fireplace (indoor or out) and do like the Swiss and enjoy a cheese fondue or raclette and a glass of crisp white wine.
Beer is universal and a good cold one after a day out skiing hits the spot. So grab a pilsner like the Austrians, an IPA like the Canadians, or a nice lager from a local Colorado craft brewery and hit the hot tub.
