Steamboat Today: A clash of snow and….cowboys

Cowboy Downhill Fun

Cowboy Downhill Fun at Steamboat

Today hosts what, for many, is a sort of comedic epitome of Steamboat.

Yes, Steamboat:  That Western-Ranch-Town-meets-World-Class-Ski-Resort.  And what better way to capture that spirit than the Cowboy Downhill.  In its 36th year, this event began when Billy Kidd, Steamboat’s Director of Skiing, and Larry Mahan, six-time All-Around World Champion cowboy, decided to have a sort of party on the snow and invited a few of their ProRodeo friends to Steamboat for a day of skiing.  The cowboys had so much fun that they decided to make it a formal tradition each year in coincidence with Denver’s National Western Stock Show, turning into what is now one of the highlights of the Steamboat winter season.

And it is not a show to be missed!  These cowboys may be pros when it comes to the rodeo arena, but on the snow their skill sets vary vastly - from pretty experienced, down to never-ever on skis.  The main event will take place at the base of the ski area at 4:00pm, and you can see today’s complete schedule below (courtesy of steamboat.com):

8:30 - 10:30am Race Registration at the Competition Services Office in Gondola Square (Cowboy participants only…more details)
