Vacationing at altitude can be breathtaking - sometimes literally!  The clean mountain air offers a pure and refreshing environment to relax with your family or friends, but the decrease in oxygen may make you more tired in the first few hours until you adjust. To get the most out of your stay, we offer a few suggestions:

1.  Chose a ski destination below 9,000 ft - The lower the altitude, the easier it will be for you to adjust. This will allow you to sleep better & ski longer every day.   Our Tip: Steamboat Springs - the lowest base at 6,900 ft but greatest vertical (over 3,000 ft)  in Colorado.

2. Drink water -  The air at altitude is so dry that every breath you take dehydrates you.  Remember to drink throughout the day and go easy on the caffeinated and alcoholic beverages.  Our Tip: Start the day with a sports drink to help minimize cramps.

3. Sunblock - Living at high altitude even for a week places you closer to the sun with less atmosphere to protect you.  Remember to use  sunblock even on a cloudy day. Cover anything that is exposed to the sun:  lips, nose and ears!   Our Tip: Choose a product with both UVA and UVB protection.

4.  Get in shape before you arrive - You can protect your body by working out regularly for a few weeks before you take a ski trip. Also allow you body to warm up before you start the day and take a break before the leg burn takes over. Remember to pace yourself during your trip. You might consider taking a day off from skiing and try another activity like dog-sledding.  Our Tip: A few weeks of Spin Class will help get your cardio where it needs to be.

5.  Stay warm - Dressing in layers is key. You can always remove layers if you get too warm. If you do get cold, take a break and go inside. Numbness in the fingers or toes is one sign your body needs to warm up. Also look for skin turning white on you and your companions. Check the nose, face, and earlobes. Our Tip: Start with a “wicking” or breathable layer next to your body, such as polypro or a wool blend - it moves the body’s sweat away from the skin keeping you dryer.

Altitude treats everyone differently  so we remind our guests to listen to their bodies and rest when needed. If you do not feel well on the mountain, come down and relax in your chalet or stroll through downtown Steamboat Springs (6,700 ft).  Remember, it’s your vacation.  Ski vacations will expose you to spectacular scenery in the great outdoors. If it leaves you gasping, that’s not necessarily a bad thing!
