Halloween in Steamboat Springs scares the traffic away

Halloween in Steamboat Springs

Trick or Treat?

In Steamboat Halloween is a genuine community affair that is both a trick and a treat. The trick: shutting down Lincoln Avenue, Steamboat’s main thoroughfare, so trick-or-treaters can stroll with ease from business to business for goodies. The treat: a central location for everyone to see and be seen in their Halloween best.

How many other towns re-route a US Highway so their inhabitants can gather for fun?

Downtown Steamboat Springs is the traditional gathering place, and the community is at its best when they come and celebrate together. In February the street will close for the Winter Carnival street events, when the town’s public works department actually adds snow to the streets for the festivities. In June it’s the final stretch for the Steamboat Marathon. In July the Independence Day Parade and a cattle drive temporarily detour motorists to accommodate events.

Lincoln Avenue was built when the horse out-numbered the automobile. Its width dictated by the room required to turn around a stagecoach and accommodate the ranchers who drove their cattle from summer to winter pastures and back again. There was a time when rodeos were held in the middle of the street until the town built a permanent arena.

From real bucking broncos to kids dressed as their favorite Denver Bronco, downtown Steamboat remains at the heart and soul of the community.

Happy Halloween!
