Early snowfall in the Rockies - a bitter sweet moment

Loveland's earliest opening in 40 years
Loveland’s earliest opening in 40 years

In Steamboat Springs we are fond of saying “you come for the winters, but you stay for the summers”.  So when the first flakes of winters wonder fall from the sky it’s a bitter-sweet moment.

It’s sweet when you think of floating through aspen glades on a bed of feather-light powder, laughing and whooping with the rest of the crowd, grinning aimlessly as tired legs later carry you to work.  It’s bitter when you think of giving up summers warm nights, sweet single-track mountain biking or tubing down the Yampa river with your kids.

Living in Steamboat is like living in two different places during the same year.  Winter and summer are simply worlds apart.  Everything changes - footwear, tires, heating bills, toys and clothing.  Everything looks different - no longer green, now white.

Secretly we are smiling because that’s what keeps life interesting around here.  As Loveland raced to open it’s first trails today, heralding the arrival of the  09-10 ski season, we remind ourselves that in just 47 days we will heading out for some turns of our own to work up an appetite for our Thanksgiving dinner.

We hope to see you out there!
