Develop your strategy for a powder day in Steamboat Springs

If you are in Steamboat Springs when a winter storm hits this winter, and you want to maximize on the potential of this magical skiing experience, you would do well to observe the habits of seasoned locals.  They will get 2 - 3 hours of the best skiing and riding on the planet before heading to work for the rest of the day.  Here’s how…

1. Be there early: Locals start planning their day around when the lifts open. If you are heading to the Gondola, plan to be there an hour or more before it opens (7:30am) if you want the freshest of freshies.  Our Tip: Stay in a ski chalet in the Burgess Creek neighborhood and head for the Thunderhead Express Lift by 8:15am to be on one of the first chairs.

2. Head to Four-Points: If you are one of the first up the Steamboat mountain, head to the Four-Points Lift and take a run down the mid-upper mountain.  Our Tip: Ski or ride Twister!!

3. Buddy’s Run: An easy cruiser run that no one ever skis as a first run on a powder day.  You will get a fresh line top to bottom - perfect to get your confidence in powder.  Our Tip - Stay right for the best powder on the edges of the trail.

4. Closet: To skiers left of the Storm Peak Express is easy tree-skiing amongst the evergreens.   Our tip: If you are looking for a more technical challenge and deeper powder, cut over to Shadows where you will find aspens instead of evergreens.

5.  Hike to No-Name Gate: From the Morningside Lift, ride down to the right and then hike up to the radio towers.  No-Name Gate offers super steep trees and deep powder once it is open. It is a technical adrenalin rush followed by a fun tree-ski out.  Our tip: Stay left at the bottom to ski out.

Of course there are many other options on a powder day and few decision are bad ones - unless you plan to sleep in until noon!
