You will know when you get to Steamboat Springs - if it's not snowing too hard
It looks like another snowy weekend in Steamboat as another Pacific storm rolls in from the west. If you see it snowing (or raining) in Whistler it’s usually a good sign that weather is heading our way with the favorable West - Northwest direction.
Everyone in Steamboat pays way too much attention to the weather channel in the winter and cross checks to a number of different weather information sources. Compiling, collating and digesting this complex pile of data and spitting out a forecast normally requires a NASA super-computer.
In Steamboat a local takes this information, looks out of the window, perhaps steps outdoors to feel the humidity and comes up with their own interpretation in fractions of a milli-second (or two).

Weather Discussion
A dirty ridge is moving over Colorado this morning as an amplifying low-pressure trough moves onto the west coast. High clouds will spread through the state today as these systems move eastward. A short-wave trough moving through the large scale flow will cause the cloud cover to deepen this evening. Snowfall will begin slowly overnight wit the greatest chance for precipitation after midnight. The center of the low-pressure circulation is forecast to move through Colorado on Thursday. The track of this feature will dictate the wind direction, but in general the flow will be from the west today, southwest tonight, and northwest midday on Thursday. Snowfall will continue on Thursday and slowly dissipate overnight as the back edge of the trough moves through the state. High-pressure will build again on Friday before the next low-pressure system moves in on Sunday.

Active week ahead will bring moderate snow to the Northern Rockies on Wednesday/Thursday and perhaps heavier snow this weekend favoring south where over 3 feet accumulated last weekend. Aspen, Wolf Creek, Silverton, Crested Butte all saw the best freshies of the year with over 40 inches of deep over a 3 day period. Face shots were plentiful! My chase took me to Aspen Highlands where they saw 3 powder days in a row and storm totals in the 30 inch range.
Overview: Snow will break out in the Sierra late Tuesday night and continue into Wednesday (8-11 inches). The Wasatch will see heavy snow after 11am on Wednesday continuing into Thursday morning (9-12 inches) in a classic Northwest flow which will finally give the Cottonwoods something to smile about. The Tetons and adjacent Idaho resorts will see moderate snow by Wednesday afternoon. Most of the Colorado mountains will see snow Wednesday night into Thursday with areas along and north of I-70 seeing the best accumulations however only in the 6-10 inch range by Thursday morning.
