Epic Powder Alert: Steamboat Springs in the white zone again!

You will know when you get to Steamboat Springs - if it's not snowing too hard

You will know when you get to Steamboat Springs - if it's not snowing too hard

It looks like another snowy weekend in Steamboat as another Pacific storm rolls in from the west.  If you see it snowing (or raining) in Whistler it’s usually a good sign that weather is heading our way with the favorable West - Northwest direction.

Everyone in Steamboat pays way too much attention to the weather channel in the winter and cross checks to a number of different weather information sources.  Compiling, collating and digesting this complex pile of data and spitting out a forecast normally requires a NASA super-computer.

In Steamboat a local takes this information, looks out of the window, perhaps steps outdoors to feel the humidity and comes up with their own interpretation in fractions of a milli-second (or two).

Our weekend forecast : we’re in the white zone

Weather Discussion

A dirty ridge is moving over Colorado this morning as an amplifying low-pressure trough moves onto the west coast. High clouds will spread through the state today as these systems move eastward. A short-wave trough moving through the large scale flow will cause the cloud cover to deepen this evening. Snowfall will begin slowly overnight wit the greatest chance for precipitation after midnight. The center of the low-pressure circulation is forecast to move through Colorado on Thursday. The track of this feature will dictate the wind direction, but in general the flow will be from the west today, southwest tonight, and northwest midday on Thursday. Snowfall will continue on Thursday and slowly dissipate overnight as the back edge of the trough moves through the state. High-pressure will build again on Friday before the next low-pressure system moves in on Sunday.

Active week ahead will bring moderate snow to the Northern Rockies on Wednesday/Thursday and perhaps heavier snow this weekend favoring south where over 3 feet accumulated last weekend. Aspen, Wolf Creek, Silverton, Crested Butte all saw the best freshies of the year with over 40 inches of deep over a 3 day period. Face shots were plentiful! My chase took me to Aspen Highlands where they saw 3 powder days in a row and storm totals in the 30 inch range.
Overview: Snow will break out in the Sierra late Tuesday night and continue into Wednesday (8-11 inches). The Wasatch will see heavy snow after 11am on Wednesday continuing into Thursday morning (9-12 inches) in a classic Northwest flow which will finally give the Cottonwoods something to smile about. The Tetons and adjacent Idaho resorts will see moderate snow by Wednesday afternoon. Most of the Colorado mountains will see snow Wednesday night into Thursday with areas along and north of I-70 seeing the best accumulations however only in the 6-10 inch range by Thursday morning.

Steamboat Springs Olympic Profiles: Nordic Combined

World Champions Johnny Spillane, Billy Demong and Todd Lodwick are the US's best contenders for our first Olympic medal

World Champions Johnny Spillane, Billy Demong and Todd Lodwick are strong contenders for more Olympic medals

Steamboat Springs has a long history of sending athletes to the Olympics in the sport of Nordic Combined. Nordic athletes have been training at our historic ski area, Howelsen Hill since it opened in 1915. The ski area, Colorado’s oldest in continuous use, has an entire ski jumping complex and has hosted World Cup events, and is the home of long line of Nordic Combined skiers.

Nordic Combined has been an event at the Olympics every year since the Winter Games began in 1924. The sport originated in Norway and combines ski jumping and cross-country disciplines into one combined competition. This year there are three events in the Winter Games:

Sunday, February 14 - Individual Normal Hill
This consists of one jump on the HS106 in the morning followed by a 10 kilometer-race in the afternoon.  Johnny Spillane became the first US Olympic Medalist in this discipline winning the Silver Medal in a thrilling race that was decided in just the last 100 yards. Todd Lodwick and Bill Demong both finished in the top 6 highlighting that the US Team is probably the strongest present and a serious contender for the Team Event.

Tuesday, February 23 - The Team Event
Teams of four skiers will compete for the best combined finishes from both events. Each athlete gets one jump on the HS140 and then the four scores are combined into one. The cross-country race is a relay, each skier races 5 kilometers.

This medal event will be televised on NBC in primetime.

Thursday, February 25 - Individual Large Hill
Skiers are scored on one jump in the HS140 followed by a 10-kilometer cross-country race.

This medal event will be televised on NBC in primetime.

This year’s U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team features 5 athletes, three of whom grew up here in Ski Town, U.S.A. and all five have trained with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.

  • Brett Camerota, Park City, UT
  • Billy Demong, Vermontville, NY
  • Taylor Fletcher, Steamboat Springs, CO
  • Todd Lodwick, Steamboat Springs, CO
  • Johnny Spillane, Steamboat Springs, CO

Steamboat Springs is very proud of all their Nordic Combined athletes, past and present, native or part-time resident. Whenever a Nordic Combined competition is held in Steamboat, it seems like the entire town shows up.

This year’s Nordic Combined team has already made history may have a great chance for several medals. You can bet the entire town of Steamboat Springs will be watching the competition. We will even have a jumbo tron set up in Gondola Square across from the entrance to One Steamboat Place. If you are not going to be at the Olympics, Ski Town, U.S.A is the best place to be!

Steamboat Springs Olympic Profiles: Freestyle Skiing Moguls and Aerials

The U.S. Olympic team trials were held in Steamboat last December

The U.S. Olympic team trials were held in Steamboat last December

Steamboat Springs was the site for the U.S. Olympic trials in December, and just before these Olympic games the whole team trained here. This year there are three mogul skiers from Steamboat and two aerialists with Steamboat ties:

Moguls: Patrick Deneen, Michael Morse and Ellie Koyander (Great Britain)

Aerials: Ryan St. Onge and Jana Lindsey

Check your local listings for details on the freestyle mogul events coming up this weekend, the women compete Saturday and the men on Sunday.

The women’s aerials competition is February 20 & 24
The men’s aerials February 22 & 25

Did you know that Steamboat Springs has played a large role in the sport of freestyle skiing?

Here’s a a few reasons how Ski Town, U.S.A. has helped put freestyle skiing on the map:

1. Park Smalley, considered the “godfather of freestyle skiing” has made his home in Steamboat Springs since 1976. Back when the sport was still referred to affectionately as “hot dogging.” A competitor, coach, TV-commentator and now Ski Hall-of-Famer, Park was instrumental in helping the sport gain its status as a competitive sport. The freestyle complex at the Steamboat Ski Area is named after him.

2. Park Smalley Freestyle Complex training ground for 2002, 2006 and 2010 Olympic Freestyle teams. It’s the last stop for our US Freestyle teams before going to the winter games. It is also the site of several Wold Cup events as well as Olympic qualifying events. In 2002 the Canadian Freestyle team also trained there before heading to Deer Valley, Utah for the Olympics.

3. Nelson Carmichael, the first U.S. athlete to earn an Olympic medal in men’s moguls, 1992 Albertville, France. Nelson grew up in Steamboat Springs, attended Park Smalley’s freestyle camps, and made his hometown very proud by being the first athlete from Steamboat to bring home an Olympic medal. Today anyone can pick up free tips on bump skiing from Nelson- he offers a free bumps clinic most Sundays on Nelson’s Run at the Steamboat Ski Area.

4. Ann Battelle, four-time Olympian and two-time World Champion. Anne only began her skiing career after graduating from Middlebury College and moving to Steamboat Springs. Although she started her mogul career somewhat late, she also made a remarkable four appearances in the Olympics in 1992, 1994, 1998 and 2002.  She was also crowned Wold Champion in 1999 and 2000. Not bad for a 10-year career!

Travis Meyer brought home silver from the 2002 Olympic games

5. Travis Meyer, Olympic silver medalist, 2002 Salt Lake. Travis moved to Steamboat Springs in high school to attend the Lowell Whiteman School and train with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.  After claiming his spot on the Olympic team at the Gold Cup here in Steamboat, Travis captured the silver medal!

If you are not going to be at the Olympics, Ski Town, U.S.A is the best place to be! We will even have a jumbo tron set up in Gondola Square across from the entrance to One Steamboat Place.

Catered Chalet Recipe of the Month - Chicken Cacciatore

Lulu's Chicken Cacciatore

Lulu's Chicken Cacciatore

Chicken Cacciatore
Prepared by Moving Mountains
Executive Chef, Lulu Martin

One of the more popular meals coming from Executive Chef Lulu’s kitchen is Chicken Cacciatore, a healthy meal and favorite for the whole family. This is also available on our newly launched Go Gourmet menu which can be accessed from our catering website.

“I love this recipe as the chicken is moist and  flavorful with a medley of fresh vegetables,” Chef Lulu said. “I recommend serving this on a bed of linguine accompanied by an earthy Malbec.”

Prep 15 minutes
Cook 40 minutes
Serves 8

Ingredients:

8               Chicken thighs
2               Boneless Red Bird chicken breasts without skin
2               Teaspoons kosher salt
1               Teaspoon cracked black pepper
1/2           Cup all purpose flour
3               Fluid ounces Colavita extra-virgin olive oil
1               Red bell pepper
14            Ounces chopped onion
3               Garlic cloves
6               Fluid ounces chardonnay wine
28             Ounces canned chopped plum tomatoes
1 1/2        Chicken broth (for water)
1/4           Cup chicken broth (for sauce)
12             Ounces water
1 1/2        Ounces chopped caper berries
1 1/2        Teaspoons dried oregano
1/4           Ounce Italian parsley

Directions:

Sprinkle the chicken pieces with salt and pepper. Dredge the chicken pieces in flour to coat lightly.

In a large heavy saute pan, heat the oil over a medium-high flames. Add the chicken pieces to pan and saute until just brown, about 5 minutes per side. Saute in batches if needed. Transfer chicken to plate and set aside.

Add the bell pepper, onion and garlic to the same pan and saute over medium heat until the onion is tender, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add the wine and simmer until reduced by half, about 3 minutes.

Add the tomatoes with their juice, broth, capers and oregano. Return the chicken to the pan and turn them to coat in the sauce. Bring sauce to a simmer over a medium-low heat until the chicken is just cooked through, (about 30 minutes for the breasts and about 20 for the thighs). After 15 minutes, add 1/4 cup of chicken broth and cover.

Executive Chef Lulu Martin

Executive Chef Lulu Martin

Once chicken is cooked through, place in the oven for 10 minutes at 350 degrees.

Using tongs, transfer the chicken to a platter. If necessary, boil the sauce until it thickens slightly, about 3 minutes. Spoon off any excess fat from atop the sauce. Spoon the sauce over the chicken, then sprinkle with Italian parsley and serve!
